It is with deep respect and admiration that we remember Barbara Taylor Bowman, a visionary in early childhood education and a founding influence on the National Institute for Early Education Research. Barbara served as a Distinguished Research Fellow and was a member of NIEER's Scientific Advisory Board at its founding, offering unwavering support and wisdom that shaped NIEER’s mission and direction.
Barbara’s remarkable career spanned decades, during which she co-founded the Erikson Institute and became a trusted voice in early education. Her work extended beyond research; she inspired countless educators and policymakers to recognize the profound impact of early childhood experiences. Known for her kindness, compassion, and brilliance, Barbara had an unparalleled understanding of the practice and politics of early education. She was unwavering in her expectations for excellence in public education and the respect owed to all young children and their families.
Barbara’s advocacy for equity and quality in early childhood education created pathways for generations of children to access nurturing and effective educational foundations. Her legacy remains deeply embedded within NIEER and the broader early childhood field. Her influence and passion will continue to guide us as we work toward a future she envisioned—a world where every child, regardless of background, has access to high-quality early learning.
