Preschool Effects on Hispanic Children’s Cognitive Development

Luis M. Laosa
This working paper explores whether the cognitive benefits of preschool education generalize to children from specific cultural or ethnolinguistic backgrounds, particularly children from the Hispanic population.

Summary

While research shows the positive effects of high-quality preschool programs on children’s cognitive development, NIEER researcher Luis Laosa stresses the importance of understanding whether the effects of preschool education may vary among children from different demographic and ethno-linguistic groups. Laosa presents evidence from three studies that indicate Hispanic children can benefit from preschool education at least as much as children from other major racial/ethnic groups in the United States.
