Washington, DC – The Caring Economy Campaign (CEC) of the Center for Partnership Studies (CPS), together with CEC coalition members, invite you to a Congressional Briefing on "The Economic Return from Investing in Care Work and Early Childhood Education."
The event will feature a presentation by Dr. Riane Eisler highlighting the new CPS-Urban Institute report: National Indicators and Social Wealth. A panel discussion will follow Dr. Eisler’s presentation moderated by René Redwood, featuring Dr. W. Steven Barnett of the National Institute of Early Education Research (NIEER), Dr. Sara Meléndez, and Shireen Mitchell, Co-Chair of the National Council of Women’s Organizations (NCWO) and founder of Digital Sisters. The briefing will also feature the new report from NIEER: Getting the Facts Right on Pre-K and the President’s Pre-K Proposal.
The CEC coalition brings together local, national, and international organizations to inform policymakers and the public of the need for, and benefits of, a caring economy. Co-sponsors of this briefing include NCWO, NIEER, Digital Sisters, National Association of Mothers’ Centers, Center for Economic Policy Research, Gender Action, and True Child.
The urgency of this briefing is highlighted by shocking statistics: more than one in five children in the U.S. lives in poverty. U.S. maternal mortality rates have doubled in the past 25 years, and are the highest of all developed nations. Women with college degrees earn $713,000 less than men over a 40 year career, largely due to gender and caregiver discrimination.
Root causes of such economic and social ills, as well as policy solutions, will be probed in this Congressional briefing, held in cooperation with Representative Eleanor Holmes-Norton, (D-DC). The briefing will be held:
Wednesday, March 20th
12:00pm – 2:00pm
Rayburn House Office Building, Room B340
Representatives of Congressional offices, the news media, and research and advocacy groups are invited. Please RSVP by March 15th at RSVPCPS@gmail.com. Space is limited. Lunch will be provided.
