Good start for many students, governor says

A state-run preschool program for low-income children expects to enroll more than 5,000 4-year-olds in public schools in 19 parishes and 1,000 to 1,100 students in private schools in six parishes for the 2002-2003 academic year, state officials said Monday. The public and private school pre-kindergarten programs are free to families that qualify for free or reduced-cost lunch programs or have household incomes less than twice the federal poverty level.
