NANTICOKE, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — Hundreds of thousands of students are busy learning at college campuses across northeastern and central Pennsylvania. But at one local college, the age of some students might surprise you.

You probably wouldn’t expect to see three and four-year-old children learning on a college campus. But that’s what’s happening now at Luzerne County Community College. “We’ve never had a partnership with a college before where we are the lab school for their early childhood students,” said Luzerne County Head Start Executive Director Lynn Evans Biga.

Luzerne County Head Start and LCCC officials gathered Thursday afternoon for a ribbon cutting ceremony to cement their partnership. Nearly three dozen pre-K aged children who would have been on the Head Start waiting list now have an opportunity to learn alongside some much older students. “We feel this is a great collaboration so that our students can benefit from it and the young children on campus will have a great opportunity to be on a college campus,” said Luzerne County Community College President Thomas Leary.
