Early start to close learning gap

Schools: Baltimore County has joined the nationwide push to teach reading and other skills to children who don't get the basics at home.

Across the country, Head Start, pre-kindergarten and kindergarten classes are supplementing their traditional offerings of nap time and recess with basic instruction in reading, writing and arithmetic. The increased emphasis on academics in early childhood education stems from recent research revealing that young minds are capable of the work.
