A new statewide project pushes for equal opportunity for pre-K students of all races.

The collaboration director of Arkansas Head Start introduced Equity Leaders Action Network (ELAN) to lawmakers at a joint education committee meeting Monday.

“Research shows if you get them early, it’ll make a world of difference when they get to the public school,” said Jacqualine¬†Govan.

During her organization’s research the last three years, Govan said they found African American boys face greater behavioral problems than their peers and help for them is lacking.

“If you expel them, they’re not getting the early childhood services and learning experiences that they need,” Govan said.
