“The Learning Never Stops”: Lessons from Military Child Development Centers for Teacher Professional Development Policy

This paper looks at the professional development of child care workers in the U.S. military and discusses how successful elements of this system could be implemented into broader-reaching teacher professional development policies.

This paper, published in Early Childhood Research & Practice, Volume 9, Number 1, reports on the professional development required for child care workers in the U.S. military’s child development centers, discussing the four distinct phases of this system. In describing these components, this article highlights the inputs that contribute to successful teacher professional development, offering lessons for policymakers seeking to upgrade professional development policies as a means to improving the quality of early childhood education programs.
